How Much Does It Cost to Restore a 1967β1968 Mustang?
β
Parts Availability: easy
The '67β'68 Mustang is the biggest of the classic Mustangs β wide enough for big-block power and long enough to look mean. Parts supply is outstanding thanks to CJ Pony Parts, National Parts Depot, and others. The cowl leak is the #1 killer: water sits in the cowl and rots the lower firewall and floor pans for years before it's visible. Inspect this first, budget accordingly.

Common Issues on the Ford Mustang
Cowl leak / firewall rot
THE #1 classic Mustang issue. The cowl drains plug, water fills the cowl box and rots the lower firewall and floor pan from inside. Look for rust below the wiper linkage.
critical
Torque box cracks
Torque boxes (where the rear upper control arm mounts to the floor) crack from stress. Failed torque boxes compromise handling and structural integrity.
critical
Floor pan rust
Classic rust spot. Push on the floors β if they flex or your screwdriver goes through, budget for full pan replacements.
high
Trunk floor rust
Check under the trunk mat along the seams and spare tire well.
medium
Front frame rail rust
Inspect the inner fender rail where it meets the firewall. Hard to see but critical for suspension geometry.
medium
Rear quarter panel rust
Quarter extensions (where the quarter meets the bumper) rust from the inside out. Tap and listen for hollow spots.

What to Look For When Buying
Before you hand over cash, go through every point on this list.
1
Open the hood, look down through the cowl vent β any daylight through rust is a red flag
2
Pull the carpet β probe floor pan with a screwdriver at the corners
3
Check torque box welds by crawling underneath with a light
4
Inspect the inner fender rails above the front frame rails
5
Look at the rear quarters from inside the trunk with a flashlight
6
Check door gaps β uneven gaps indicate prior accident damage
7
Confirm VIN on dashboard matches door tag and title
8
Verify engine code on door tag matches the engine present
9
Test all four window regulators β manual or power
10
Listen for differential noise (clunk on acceleration/decel = worn spider gears)
